About North East Bakery

North East Bakery Ltd. was formed in 2004 when Chapel Bakery and Patisserie was bought out by Andrew Cotterell and Greg Phillips.

At the same time an opportunity arose to purchase two shops from Nichol & Laidlow - a traditional baker in Hexham and Corbridge.

These new shops complemented the existing bakery shop in Chapel House and the group of outlets became known as ‘Nichols’, fast gaining a good reputation for quality, fresh bakery and confectionery products.

At the same time the company began to expand its wholesale trade, mainly of bread buns to caterers and sandwich businesses. Within twelve months of the company's formation, turnover had trebled.

After heavy investment and growth of sales in the first year of trading Greg Phillips was appointed as Managing Director of North East Bakery in September 2005 and a period of re-organisation and improvements to the business process followed.

The quality of the products – traditionally crafted bakery and confectionery products, sandwiches, pies and pasties, patisserie - has always been at the heart of the business but the increased effectiveness within the company could now provide a more solid foundation for its future development.

This development came in the form of an asset acquisition from Milligans Bakery Ltd. including the impressive 20,000 sq ft purpose built facility in Newburn and 15 bakery shops in key locations throughout the North East of England.

This significant expansion has given North East Bakery far superior facilities, greater control over all of its core product lines, including the facility to manufacture its own pies and pasties.

It also provides the company with an opportunity to strengthen the Nichols brand and develop a greater presence within the retail bakery sector in the North East.
